Chit and Chitta are often used interchangably. But there is a difference between the two.

Chitta is a generic term referring to the realm of previous or known knowledge; chitta, when grouped with Manas, Buddhi and Ahamkar, means memory.

When Chitta holds no object oriented thought, it becomes Chit or Consciousness/ Awareness; it becomes the alertness of Yognidra, the awareness of Antar Maoun.

The Chitta is that mind-space which we seek to still with yoga practises, to make into Chit or awareness. When not still, and consumed by thoughts of objects, then that mind space is called Chitta.

Chit is consciousness and awareness, Chitta is memories or thoughts, where thoughts are simply objects of Manas. When Chit is associated with a thought or an object, or many thoughts of many objects, of past experiences and of future fears/hopes, apprehensions/dreams, then the mindspace becomes Chitta. Chitta = Chit + Object.

When you remove the Vishaya (Object) then Chitta = Chit and mind becomes pure awareness or consciousness.
