Add this relatively unknown food group to your diet and reap wellness in spades!

Twice a month, on Ekaadashi, it is advisable to give your system a break - let it rest. It is an excellent form of internal detoxification and cleansing. Fasting from food on these days is recommended (water is fine) through the day. Some prefer liquids, or just milk. Some need minimal sustenance but prefer fruits, or one faraali meal.

However, should your day's activities require the consumption of calories, check out the list of faraali foods below. These foods alkalise and detox your system while providing the required energy. Of course, dont binge on the permitted foods!! It kind of defeats the purpose.

Sindha salt, unprocessed cane sugar or jaggery, turmeric powder are the only seasonings one must use for faraali foods.


Rajgira amaranth seeds

Sabudana sago

Little round granules of tapioca milk.

Shakkarkand sweet potato

Wafer thin slices, baked or fried. Steamed and mashed.

Aloo potatoes

Doodh milk

As flavoured milk, in dahi or custard form or set as kulfi or traditional home style ice cream.

Fruits all kinds

As juices or in a custard fruit salad.
